Rural RDI milieus in transition towards smart Bioeconomy Clusters and Innovation Ecosystems (RDI2CluB)

Rural Baltic Sea Region (BSR) areas have abundant natural resources, but have challenges to reach their full bioeconomy potential due to limited human capital and lack of agglomeration economies.

The goal is to develop smart, sustainable and inclusive growth of bioeconomy in the rural areas of Baltic Sea Region by uniting all innovation actors – entrepreneurs, policy makers, researchers, as well as local society members, in regional and transnational cooperation.

Objectives

Project’s goal is to enhance growth opportunities based on an increased capacity of innovation actors to apply smart specialization approach.

Activities

  1. Identify the most potential bioeconomy subsectors & promising interfaces for innovation and new business development.
  2. Recognize assets and the obstacles to be tackled to implement S3 for exploiting the full bioeconomy potential in the region.
  3. Benchmark regions with Good Practice Bioclusters in partner regions or elsewhere in BSR or EU area.
  4. Prepare Joint Action Plans (JAPs) to develop Bioeconomy Cluster/Innovation Ecosystem (BC/BIE) in each region.
  5. Involve civil society in the discussion about objectives for developing bioeconomy.

Results

  • The participants produce benchmarked regional bioeconomy profiles for five participating regions of Central Finland/Saarijärvi (Finland), Innlandet/Hedmark (Norway), Swietokrzyskie (Poland), Vidzeme (Latvia) and Estonia.
  • An operation model for innovation management in the hub, as well as an open virtual BSR biobusiness hub (OVBH) are set up to manage the hub and to provide the practices and platforms for SME involvement.
  • To ensure the durability and uptake of project outputs beyond the project duration and partnership, the participants carry out pilot actions to improve the OVBH, to scale up the hub and to test the operation model and the newest technology.
