The Vidzeme Planning Region has developed two new loop trails featuring educational games along the popular long-distance hiking route, The Forest Trail. These additions were developed as part of the Accessible Hiking Trails project within the Estonia–Latvia Programme. The aim is to make The Forest Trail more accessible for families with children and for those who prefer shorter, easier hikes.
One of the new loop trails is located on Section 8 of The Forest Trail (Caunītes–Valmiera), near Sietiņiezis. The second is on Section 10 (Strenči–Spicu Bridge), near Kauči (landmark: parking lot). Both trails are circular, starting and ending at the same point, and are clearly marked in nature with the Brīvdabis sign for easy identification.
Hiking Loop Near Sietiņiezis
This 3.8 km trail features four educational nature games that allow visitors to learn about forest animals, explore the sounds of different tree species, and play with the Rain Trees. Most of the trail is accessible for strollers; however, one section includes stairs.
Hiking Loop Near Kauči
This 3 km loop includes a digital, interactive game designed for families. The game features an engaging, question-and-answer format that encourages both children and adults to explore the forest and discover the area’s natural and cultural heritage.
The game is free to play and great for families. To join in, visitors need a smartphone and the “LOQUIZ” app. Clear instructions for the starting point can be found near the Gauja River resting place. The trail is stroller-friendly, making it easy to enjoy with young children.
Pilot Event Held
On June 12, a pilot event for the new loop trail and games in nature was held near Sietiņiezis in Valmiera Municipality. Attendees included project partners from Latvia and Estonia, families with children, guests from the Setomaa children’s folklore group, Valmiera Municipality tourism specialists, and representatives from the Latvian Nature Conservation Agency. Participants explored the trail, tried the games, and described the experience as a fun and engaging outdoor adventure.
We invite you to discover both new loops and enjoy nature in a fun, educational way. See you on The Forest Trail!
