International project “ABC” launched in the Netherlands – focus on advancing sustainable construction in Vidzeme

international project abc launched in the netherlands focus on advancing sustainable construction in vidzeme

From May 20 to 22, the kick-off meeting of the Interreg Europe programme 2021-2027 project “ABC” (Architecture, Building, Carbon) took place in the Netherlands, bringing together partners from eight European countries. Latvia is represented in the project by the Vidzeme Planning Region (VPR) and Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences (ViA), who aim to jointly promote the development and integration of low-carbon and sustainable construction practices and policies in Latvia.

During the event, participants visited several good practice examples, including the ‘t Gagel regenerative farm and the company “Miscancell”, which cultivates miscanthus – a plant with significant potential in the construction sector as an insulating and cellulose-based material.

Inguna Kucina, Project Manager at Vidzeme Planning Region, highlighted: “The ABC project is closely aligned with the objectives of the Vidzeme Planning Region Development Programme 2021–2027, which aims to promote a sustainable environment and innovative, resource-efficient construction. The construction sector is a significant source of emissions, and it is crucial for us to implement solutions that improve both quality of life and climate resilience. This project enables us to learn from experienced partners and strengthen cooperation at both national and regional levels.”

A key aspect of the project is the collaboration between the two Latvian partners – Vidzeme Planning Region ensures strategic policy alignment, while the New School of Construction at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences contributes expert knowledge and supports the transfer of innovation in the construction field.

Throughout the duration of the project until 2027, partners will explore best practices in carbon capture and resource efficiency, implement pilot actions, and improve related regional policies. The next partner meeting is scheduled to take place in Greece and will focus on soil regeneration.

About the ABC project

The ABC project is being implemented within the framework of Interreg Europe in 11 countries with the aim of improving regional policy instruments to create economic opportunities for the production of bio-based building materials and the related value chain.

The project plans to include nature-based (new, more climate-friendly) materials/products and/or (regenerative) materials in the improvements of regional policy instruments, ensuring new sources of income/financial models (carbon credits, green financing tools), carbon accounting methods and certification (ONCRA), as well as related capacity building, education program development and training.
